    Our client is seeking a Product Development Programme Manager to programme management of a multi-million two year product development, with subsequent transfer to manufacturing, of an electronic gas meter. The development is for a European market, and must deliver to a well-defined specification, and within a tight timeframe. The programme is phased, and includes:

    Alpha product development of basic electronic meter, risk reduction for beta development, external testing and validation.
    Beta product development, including rf communications module, extensive firmware functionality, full type approval testing with external test house, and preparation of full documentation pack for manufacturing by a contract equipment manufacturer (CEM).
    Support for transfer of design to CEM, production ramp-up, and failure analysis.

    Responsibilities will include timescale, budget, and product target cost. The programme manager will be required to recruit project team members and to manage the internal and external resources.

    Must have experience of managing new product development and transfer to high-volume manufacturing, preferably including experience of working with contract manufacturing. Multidisciplinary engineering experience is preferred, ideally with products involving electronic and mechanical elements.

    Must have the leadership skills and gravitas to inspire and motivate the project team, common sense and good communication skills are essential. Professionalism, good personal organisation and self discipline are also required.

    SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
    Essential:
    Proven project management skills in a multi-disciplinary technology-based product development environment.
    Good leadership, communication, negotiation and customer-facing skills.
    Sufficient technical background to be able to understand the technical tradeoffs and issues in the design and to challenge assumptions made by the rest of the project team
    A good balance of commercial, technical and management skills
    Knowledge of design for manufacture and manufacturing processes.
    Involvement with the design, specification and purchasing of tools and fixturing.
    Experience of designing for and working with offshore CEMs.
    Experience of data-driven quality systems in a manufacturing environment.

    Desirable:
    Experience of manufacturing products at ~ million-off quantities.
    Experience designing against and certifying to achieve third-party approvals.
    Knowledge of analogue and digital electronics and electronics manufacturing processes.
    Knowledge of materials and mechanical manufacturing processes including injection moulding and deep drawing.
    Creativity, problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills.
    Understanding intellectual property issues, including infringement.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    A good degree in a technical area such as engineering .
